Hokkien Mee, 大山脚广西伯公埕福建面 (Pek Kong Cheng, Bukit Mertajam)

Two weeks ago, my parents and I went to Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam's Tua Pek Kong temple for some food. The temple does not serve food. It is just that a lot of food vendors set up their stalls in front of this temple and it is really popular with foodies, make it local or outstation.

Our main purpose was for their hokkien mee and my dad got so disappointed when the stall was not opened that night. So, we went back yesterday and again, it was not there. While my dad was at the point of cursing, my mom saw a blinking LED sign board and VOILA! It was a signboard to the hokkien mee stall. They have moved to the back of the temple instead of their usual spot on the right side of the temple by the alley.

This signboard was placed far back of the alley, and we did miss it last week.

All that fuss over, our bowl of hokkien mee is served at a standard size of RM4.00 with two chicken feet and a big headed prawn.

They have also upped their game in that they now served cappucino with coffee art (RM4.00). But don't bother ordering it if you can't wait. It took so long for this to be served to us, at the point of us emptying our bowl. But, the taste was great!

If you know where the market is, it is just opposite of the market before the turning to Jalan Danby. Opening hours: 7.30pm to 12am and they have moved to a shop behind the temple since 1st September 2014.

House of Udang Galah (H.U.G.)

 Peking duck

 stir fry pork

 signature tofu

 chicken

 treasure pot

 freshwater prawns

claypot fish - catch of the day

deep fried or stir fried kailan

This restaurant, House of Udang Galah or HUG, located along Jalan Hutton just before New World Park if you are coming from Jalan Larut after exiting from Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah in Georgetown, Penang. Its ambience and price are fit for occasions only. If you don't mind paying more for high end Chinese delicacies, this one is worth trying at least once. "Udang galah" is "fresh water prawns" in English and the prawns are home bred. Try having it with their signature sauce of lime and chillies. It really gives a good kick and wake you up!

The Peking duck is served like how it was in UK's Chinatown. The duck meat is shredded finely and served with some spring roll or popiah skin, sweet bean sauce, spring onions and cucumber strips.

We celebrated my dad's birthday in this restaurant and for that purpose, we found our dining experience with HUG to be great! Staffs were friendly and always nearby to help.
